Discover Russia

Welcome to a land of vast landscapes, rich history, and warm, generous people. Russian culture is built on a foundation of deep tradition and heartfelt hospitality. To help you feel at home, here is a small glimpse into the words and ways of our world.

A Warm Welcome

To greet each other, we say ‘Здравствуйте' [Zdravstvuyte]. This is a formal and polite way to say ‘Hello'. For friends and family, a warmer ‘Привет' [Privet] is used. Both are your first step into a friendly conversation.
To say thank you, the word is ‘Спасибо' [Spasibo].
For goodbye, we have two common phrases. ‘До свидания' [Do svidaniya] is the formal and classic ‘goodbye', meaning ‘until we meet again'. A more casual farewell among friends is ‘Пока' [Paka], which simply means ‘bye'.

A Taste of Tradition

Russian cuisine is a celebration of the seasons, designed to comfort and nourish. Our meals are often shared with family, friends and loved ones around a full table.
Our most famous traditional dish is ‘Борщ' [Borscht], a vibrant and hearty beet soup with beef and vegetables, often served with sour cream.
No visit is complete without trying ‘Пельмени' [Pelmeni], delicious dumplings filled with meat, mushrooms, or potatoes, a true comfort food.
For a taste of our culinary history, try ‘Блины' [Bliny], thin pancakes that can be served with savory fillings like beef or sweetened with jam and honey.
And for a breakfast or dessert, you must taste ‘Сырники' [Sirniki]. These are delightful fried pancakes made from fresh cottage cheese, offering a soft interior and a slightly golden crust. They are traditionally served with sour cream, jam, or honey, making for a perfectly sweet and satisfying treat.
Our Traditional Clothes

While modern clothing is worn daily, our traditional costumes are worn with pride during festivals, holidays, and celebrations, connecting us to our past.
For women, the traditional dress is the ‘Сарафан' [Sarafan], a long, elegant pinafore dress worn over a blouse. It is often brilliantly embroidered with symbols that tell a unique story.
The most iconic headdress is the ‘Кокошник' [Kokoshnik], a beautiful and ornate crown-like headpiece, often decorated with intricate beadwork and patterns.
For men, the traditional attire is both practical and dignified. The most recognizable item is the ‘Косоворотка' [Kosovorotka], a linen or cotton shirt with a unique slanting collar. This shirt was often worn loose over the trousers and tied with a belt.
Flora and Fauna around us
The Black Sea

Sirius coastlines were shaped by the unique character of the Black Sea. A body of water steeped in history and myth; it has been a crossroads of civilizations for millennia. Its distinct feature is a deep layer of hydrogen sulfide, which means life exists only in the upper water levels, creating a fascinating and delicate marine environment.
The sea’s moderating influence is what created the ‘sub-tropical' paradox of Sirius, giving the region relatively mild winters that contrast sharply with the nearby alpine conditions.
The Caucasus Ecosystem

Rising just inland from the coast, the Caucasus Mountains are one of the planet’s 36 ‘biodiversity hotspots', meaning they are both incredibly rich in life and highly threatened. This majestic mountain range served as the natural stadium for the alpine events and is home to:
  • Colchic rainforests and beech forests that have survived for millions of years.
  • Iconic Wildlife: including the endangered Caucasian leopard (Persian leopard), the mighty wisent (European bison), and the majestic Caucasian tur, a wild goat species.
  • Thousands of plant species found nowhere else on Earth.
We invite you to explore further and discover the soul of Russia for yourself.
