Examination Rounds

The International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) 2025 will consist of three examination rounds: the Experimental, Theoretical, and Multiple-Choice Questionnaire (MCQ) rounds. Each round is designed to challenge students' understanding, creativity, and application of scientific principles.

General Examination Information

Duration: Each examination round is planned to last 4 hours.

Calculator: A standard Casio FX-220 calculator will be provided to each student at their examination desk. All calculators must remain on the table when students leave the examination hall.

Experimental Round

This round emphasizes hands-on scientific investigation, data collection, and teamwork.

Equipment: Teams will be provided with a laptop running the English-language version of the Windows operating system for data acquisition and control. Please note that data processing software (e.g., Excel) will not be installed, as computer-based data processing is not required for this round.

Data and Sample Submission:
  • Digital Files: Students may generate data files during the experiment. These must be saved on the computer according to the specific instructions in the Question Paper, as they are essential for the marking and moderation process.
  • Samples: Students will obtain physical, chemical, biological or other samples during the experiments. These must be clearly labeled as per the instructions and submitted for marking along with the handwritten solution and digital files. The samples will be used as an objective control during the marking process and will give points even if further steps were not done.

Teamwork: Effective planning and strong cooperation within teams are highly encouraged and are key to success in this round.

Theoretical Round

This round tests students' ability to solve complex, interdisciplinary problems.

Format: Students can expect a set of 1 to 6 problems that integrate concepts from physics, chemistry, and biology.

Skills Assessed: The problems require general scientific thinking, in-depth analysis, logical matching of concepts, and the application of knowledge based on the official IJSO Syllabus.

Multiple-Choice Questionnaire (MCQ) Round

This round assesses broad scientific knowledge and quick, accurate reasoning.

Testing System: Answers will be submitted through a secure, local web-based testing system on provided laptops.

Technical Environment: Laptops will run the English-language version of Windows, and the testing system interface will be in English.

Proctoring: For the integrity of the examination, laptop screens will be recorded throughout the MCQ round.

Question Format: The test may incorporate various media, such as images, diagrams, and animations, within the questions.

Demo Session: A demonstration session of the testing system will be organized for all participating students and team leaders. This session is planned for early November 2025 and will be coordinated exclusively through the official Country Coordinators.
